Sir Francis Charles Chichester was born on 17 September 1901.1 He was the son of Reverend Charles Chichester and Emily Annie Page.2 He married, firstly, Muriel Eileen Blakiston <p21940.htm>, daughter of M. F. Blakiston <p21940.htm>, in 1923.1 He married, secondly, Sheila Mary Craven <p21940.htm>, daughter of Gerald Craven <p21940.htm>, on 25 February 1937.1 He died on 26 August 1972 at age 70.1 Sir Francis Charles Chichester was educated in Marlborough School, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England <pd164.htm>.1 He was he was the second person to fly slo from London to Sydney in 1929.1 He was he made the first long distance solo flight in a seaplane in 1931.1 He was decorated with the Johnston Memorial Trophy for Air Navigation in 1931.1 He was chairman of Francis Chichester Ltd, Map and Guide Publishers.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Institute of Navigation (F.I.N.).1 In 1960 he won the first solo Trans-Atlantc yacht race.1 He was decorated with the Yachtsman of the Year TRophy in 1960.1 He was invested as a Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1964.1 Between 27 August 1966 and 28 May 1967 he circumnavigated the world via Cape Horn in Gypsy Moth IV.1 He was decorated with the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographic Society in 1967.1 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1967 receiving the accolade from HM Queen Elizabeth II with Drake's sword at Greenwich.1 He wrote the book The Lonely Sea and the Sky.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography
